At 68, I joined the Fitness First Breakthrough Challenge with a simple goal: to build the strength, mobility and confidence to remain active and independent as I grow older. I was not aiming for big muscles or impressive weights. I wanted the freedom to manage everyday life comfortably and on my own terms.
Strength That Matters in Everyday Life
Before the challenge, bending to load the washing machine or clipping my toenails while seated on a low sofa often strained my lower back. I also needed to push myself up with my hands to stand. After two months of consistent training, these tasks became noticeably easier. I could bend with less discomfort and stand using my leg strength alone. Progress during the third month was more subtle, but I continued to feel gradual improvements in strength, mobility and confidence. These small changes mean a great deal: they help me preserve my independence.
A Change Beyond the Gym
I learned that strength is not built through workouts alone. With encouragement from my personal trainer, Shawn Pang, I began paying closer attention to balanced meals, protein and vegetables. I started shopping more thoughtfully and cooking more at home — something I once regarded as a chore. Exercise became the starting point for healthier habits, greater self-discipline and a new way of caring for myself.
The Support Behind My Progress
Shawn Pang at Fitness First Westgate has been central to this journey. His approach goes beyond lifting weights to emphasise functional strength, mobility, posture, movement quality and safe technique — especially important for older adults. His patient guidance, encouragement and structured training helped me stay consistent. Fitness First Westgate’s facilities, equipment and professional environment provided the support I needed to make exercise a sustainable routine.
My Greatest Breakthrough
The biggest change has been in how I think about ageing. I no longer see it only as a gradual loss of physical ability. With suitable guidance and consistent effort, I can take meaningful steps to remain capable and independent. Three months ago, I joined to build a stronger body. Today, I have gained something more: healthier habits, greater confidence and renewed determination to live well at 68 and beyond.
My heartfelt thanks to Fitness First and especially Shawn Pang. The challenge may be over, but my commitment to healthy ageing has only begun. It is never too late to become stronger — physically and in the way we embrace life.
Stay fit. Stay healthy. Stay happy. One workout at a time.
